Encouraging Your Dog Outdoors

If your dog hasn’t been used to spending time outside you’ll need to introduce it to them slowly.  They may feel overwhelmed and beg to go back indoors so you’ll need to encourage them outside with activities so that they cab build their confidence.
Here are some tips on the types of activities you can do to get them outdoors:

Start spending time with them outdoors.  Introduce daily walks which you can build up in time from an initial ten minute walk to one that’s about forty minutes long.  Research how much exercise your dog’s breed needs and use this as a gauge for how much exercise you should give him.

Play games!  Dogs are playful creatures and will love playing with you.  Try Frisbees, throwing balls or tug and pull games.  Again what you dog enjoys will depend on the breed so experiment.

Keep them safe and contained if you are letting them off the lead.  In the back garden make sure your fence is adequate to keep them in and in the park keep them on a lead unless there is a specific dog enclosure.

Provide toys and chews so that your dog can sit outside and enjoy them.  Although this may not be exercise it still encourages them to spend time outdoors.
