Lead By Example
It is a sad fact that many people call cats names and demonise these beautiful felines as if they were evil, clawing creatures. Perhaps the stigma from hundreds of years gone by surrounding cats lives on into this day and age. No matter where its source is there are many ill-educated people who misunderstand these loving and graceful animals. It seems to often come from a bad childhood experience where a cat has scratched or bitten a child or due to the fears and misconceptions of a parent being passed on to their children.
Both dogs and cats play a huge role in our UK society and as adults and parents we have a joint responsibility to ensure that children understand these animals and how to interact with them to avoid the instances of pet cruelty that are so prevalent in the press these days. It is well researched that if a child displays cruelty towards animals they are more likely to display anti-social behaviour as they grow into adults.
We need to teach children by example. Children absorb information like sponges and we should teach them about the differences between cats and dogs and how to handle them. Teach them to respect felines and how that requires giving them their own space, looking after their health needs and giving the opportunity to rest and play.
